Fifty-four rooms on South Main changed what a weekend here looks like.
Until recently the honest answer to "where do you stay in Rockford" was Grand Rapids. Hotel Rose changed that. It put fifty-four rooms and four suites on South Main, directly above Char + Barrel and MudPenny, which means dinner, breakfast and bed are the same building and everything else in town is within a few blocks of the front desk. You will see it searched as Hotel Rose, the Rose Hotel and Rose Hotel Rockford, roughly interchangeably. The name is Hotel Rose.
The practical case for staying in town rather than commuting from Grand Rapids comes down to the social district and the trail. Between noon and 10 p.m. you can carry a drink between participating businesses inside the RORA boundary, which is a very different evening from one that ends with a twenty-minute drive south. And the White Pine Trail runs through the middle of town, so a bed here is a bed at mile zero of ninety-two paved miles.
The Colonial Motel on Northland Drive is the older, plainer option, and it is what people are looking for when they search for a motel in Rockford rather than a hotel.
Past that you are into the wider area. Belmont is six miles south and about nine minutes down US-131, Comstock Park ten miles, and the cluster of highway hotels north of Grand Rapids off exits 91 through 95 puts you fifteen to twenty minutes from Rockford's Main Street. That is the fallback for Start of Summer weekend in early June and Harvest Fest in late September, which are the two weekends of the year when rooms in town go early.
