Coffee shops in Rockford, Michigan
Two roasters, a coffeehouse in the old train depot, and a kombucha bar on Courtland.
For a town of six thousand, Rockford roasts a surprising amount of its own coffee.
Quickwater Coffee Roasters is the downtown one, at 8 East Bridge Street just off Main, roasting on site and open at seven Monday through Saturday and nine on Sunday. It is also on the RORA participant list, which is a sentence you do not often get to write about a coffee roaster.
Herman's Boy, out at 220 Northland Drive, is the older institution and calls itself the oldest specialty coffee roastery in the Midwest. The coffee is one counter of several: there is also a deli, a bakery, a confectionery, a smokehouse and a room of kitchen goods. Weekdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday from 7:30, Sunday from 8:30 to 3.
Hannah's Coffeehouse took over Rockford's historic train depot at 31 Courtland Drive, which is the most specific-to-Rockford place in town to drink a coffee and worth the walk for the building alone. Boochie Bar at 39 Courtland is the wellness end of the street: house kombucha on tap, açaí bowls and smoothies alongside the coffee.
MudPenny, on South Main under Hotel Rose, is in the directory as a restaurant and belongs on this page anyway. It pours craft coffee from seven in the morning and does not stop being a good place to sit until it closes as a dinner room at night.
If you want a drive-thru rather than a room, there is a Biggby out at the Rockford Ridge centre where 10 Mile meets US-131, which is the one you pass on the way in from the highway.
One correction, because it sends people the wrong way. Searches for the Rockford Coffee Crawl and for Wired Cafe both point at Rockford, Illinois. Neither has anything to do with Michigan.
