Twenty-two televisions is the number that matters here. Rogue River Tavern has been the game-on room in downtown Rockford since 2001, family owned the whole time, and the screens are the reason people pick it over anywhere else on a Saturday afternoon in autumn.
It works as a restaurant as well as a bar. Local craft beer on tap, cocktails, and a bar menu that runs past the usual, in a room that stays casual enough to bring children to. They take reservations by phone, which is worth doing on a big game day rather than turning up and hoping.
The location does a lot of quiet work. It sits within a short walk of the downtown shops, Overlook Park at the dam, and the White Pine Trail, which means it catches people coming off the trail as readily as people coming out of the shops. It is also on the Rockford Outdoor Refreshment Area participant list, so between noon and ten a drink can travel with you to the rest of the district.
